European MPs alerted to the critical situation of democracy and human rights in Tunisia

The Geneva Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CGDDh)  has alerted today all European MPs to the worrying situation of democracy and human rights in Tunisia. It has notably underlined that since the unconstitutional measures of July 25, 2021, the Tunisian parliamentary system is facing a major crisis. The President has suspended the constitution, obstructed the democratic process and increased his powers through presidential decrees. This excessive concentration of powers led to the suspension and then to the abrogation of the Tunisian Constitution of 2014. It also led to the dissolution of parliament by presidential decree, a precedent without parallel in the world and the recent parliamentary elections were boycotted by 92% of Tunisian voters.

The Geneva Center recalled the judgment of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights ordering the Tunisian State to restore constitutional democracy by repealing presidential decrees and to establish the Constitutional Court. It has also mentioned the position of the European Parliament and that of the Parliament of Geneva, the Grand Conseil which expressed its concern over the deterioration of the situation of fundamental rights in Tunisia.

The CENTER reiterates its concerns about the situation in Tunisia and calls on all parliaments, governments and international civil society to:

condemn the serious violations of the constitutional order and the rule of law by the authoritarian power of the current president, author of a real creeping coup;

condemn the repression and brutality of which many opponents of the system of dismantling the rule of law are victims today;

call for respect in Tunisia for press and media freedom, as well as freedom of expression, including for bloggers, as well as freedom of assembly;

work for the need for a broad social dialogue with the participation of political parties, civil society organizations – to overcome the current political and constitutional crisis.
